ORMOC CITY – A freshman student from Southern Leyte State University-Bontoc Campus grabbed the 20thNational Statistic Office (NSO) Quiz regional championship held at the New Ormoc City Hall on November 17.

Norvim Hombre, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) freshman bested 21 other contestants in region 8.  He was on the 2ndplace after 2 rounds but the leading contestant from Samar College was disqualified after the quiz officials learned that she was not a first timer freshman before the final round resumed.

It was a tight race for Hombre.  He was being tailed by a colleague from Southern Leyte, College of Maasin and one from Northern Samar College.  It was an all boys contest in the finals.

Hombre said that he was very much surprised and did not expect the win since it was the first time that their school participated in such competition.

His coach, Redney M. Solomon said that they will do advance reading and more on computation practice in preparation to the national quiz championship in Manila.

Director Raul F. Dones, Regional Director, NSO RO8 said that the quiz was simultaneously done in the country.  He informed that region 8 had already produced a national champion, years ago. She was Jane De Veyra from University of the Philippines Tacloban.  Then last year region 8 landed 1strunner-up. It was represented by Visayas State University (VSU) formerly known as VisCA of Baybay City.
